Autumn colors (late October–November) add visual drama. Winter skiing (December–March) offers Kyoto-area skiing convenience, but the slopes are modest (intermediate-level runs, nothing challenging). If you're serious about skiing, go to Nagano or Niigata instead; if you want accessible mountain experience with Lake Biwa views, visit in warmer months. **Terrace seating tactics:** The Grand Terrace cafe (main terrace) has 150+ seats but fills quickly on weekends and holidays (11:00–15:00). Arrive before 10:30 or after 15:00 to secure lakefront-facing seats. The North Terrace and Cafe 360 (smaller terraces) are less crowded alternatives with equally good views. Bring sunscreen and hat — the terraces are fully exposed with no shade; summer sun at 1,100m elevation is intense. **Zip line experience:** The zip line is one of Japan's longest (169m length, 100m height) with Lake Biwa backdrop. The flight lasts 40–50 seconds at speeds up to 60 km/h. First-timers are nervous during platform wait but the actual flight is exhilarating — the view while airborne is spectacular. Worth the ¥3,000 if you enjoy adventure activities; skip if you're scared of heights. The skywalker (suspension bridge walk) is tamer alternative offering similar views without speed.
