Shiretoko Peninsula
Image d'illustration — il ne s'agit pas d'une photo de ce lieu.
Shiretoko is the end of the road in Hokkaido—literally. The peninsula juts northeast into the Sea of Okhotsk, and there's no way to cross the interior. One coastal road runs along the west side to Utoro, another on the east to Rausu, and the rest is trackless wilderness where brown bears outnumber people three to one. The Ainu called it 'sir-etok,' meaning 'the place where the earth ends,' which fits when you're standing on the cliffs watching orcas hunt offshore.
The UNESCO designation came in 2005 because the ecosystem here stays intact—salmon run upriver every fall, bears fish the streams, eagles scavenge the leftovers, and the whole chain keeps cycling. You can walk the Shiretoko Five Lakes trail if rangers deem it safe, though they close sections when bears get active. Most visitors stick to the elevated boardwalk (no bears, limited views) or take a boat tour along the coast. June through September is the main season; by November everything shuts down for winter.
