Shiretoko Peninsula

**Ground trail access:** The 3km loop around all five lakes requires a certified guide from mid-May through July 31 (peak bear season) and costs ¥5,000-8,000 per person. Groups of 10 leave every 30 minutes starting at 7:30am; book exactly two months ahead via the Shiretoko Five Lakes Field House website or you won't get a slot. The boardwalk alternative (800m, 30 minutes) is always open and gives you views of the first lake plus Mt. Rausu reflected in the water. It's elevated 3 meters above ground so bears can't reach you, which also means you're looking down at the lake instead of standing at shoreline level. Trade-off: safety versus immersion. **Bear reality check:** Roughly 220 brown bears live on the peninsula. You will not see one from the boardwalk (they avoid it), but ground trail hikers encounter bears a few times per month during summer. In August 2023, a bear charged a guided group near the third lake; the guide fired bear spray and the bear retreated. No one was hurt, but the trail closed for three days. If you hike, you'll get a 10-minute bear safety briefing: make noise constantly, watch for scat (dark and fibrous if the bear's eating plants, full of salmon bones in autumn), never run, back away slowly if you see one. Rangers assess trail conditions every morning at 6:00am and post closures by 7:00am if fresh tracks appear. **Boat tours:** Two companies run tours from Utoro harbor. The small boats (40 passengers, ¥8,000, 90 minutes) hug the coastline and get closer to waterfalls and sea caves; the large boats (200 passengers, ¥6,000, 75 minutes) have bathrooms and indoor seating but keep more distance. Both routes pass Furepe Falls (water seeps through the cliff face and drops straight into the ocean) and Kamuiwakka Falls (where hot spring water mixes with the waterfall). Sea eagles perch on rocks, and harbor seals haul out on ledges at low tide. Orca sightings happen maybe once a week during summer—resident pods hunt salmon near the coast. If you see a dorsal fin, the boat will pause. **September salmon run:** Late September through October, chum salmon return to spawn in Shiretoko's rivers. This draws bears to the stream mouths, and boat tours run 'bear-watching' routes focusing on the coastline where bears fish in shallow water. You'll see them from 50-100 meters offshore—close enough to watch them pin salmon with their paws. The Rusha River mouth (accessible only by boat) reliably has 3-5 bears fishing simultaneously during peak weeks. **Lodging in Utoro:** Most hotels here are standard Japanese resort affairs—large, dated, buffet dinners. Shiretoko Grand Hotel (¥18,000-28,000 per person with two meals) has the best onsen: outdoor rotemburo facing the Sea of Okhotsk, water at 41°C with a faint sulfur smell. Kiki Shiretoko (¥22,000-35,000) is smaller and newer, with better food (kaiseki featuring local kinki fish and ikura). Book by late April for July-August dates. Rausu, on the east coast, is cheaper and less touristy—mostly fishing families and a couple of small inns—but farther from the Five Lakes.
