Chubu Centrair International Airport (中部国際空港) sits entirely on a man-made island 3.5km offshore in Ise Bay, accessible via a bridge from Tokoname. Beyond its function as Nagoya's international gateway, Centrair operates as a destination — the terminal features a rooftop observation deck with unobstructed sunset views over the ocean, an onsen bathhouse with open-air baths overlooking arriving aircraft, a traditional Japanese crafts shopping street (招き猫通り, Manekineko Dori) selling local ceramics and products, and multiple observation decks for aviation enthusiasts.

The airport's design philosophy emphasizes comfort during layovers — the Sky Deck (free access, open 7:00–22:00) provides 300 meters of oceanfront walkway with seating, where visitors watch planes land over the water while feeling sea breezes. The onsen, Fu no Yu (風の湯, ¥1,200 for 2 hours, part of the SOLA SPA facility), allows bathing while watching aircraft through floor-to-ceiling windows — an surreal juxtaposition of traditional Japanese bathing culture and modern aviation.

Guide d'initié

Premium
**Sunset deck timing:** The Sky Deck's western orientation makes it ideal for sunset viewing (year-round, but November–February offers clearest skies). Arrive 30 minutes before sunset (check local sunset times) to claim seating. The sun sets over the ocean horizon with nothing obstructing the view — aircraft approach from the west, appearing as silhouettes against orange-pink skies. Bring a light jacket (ocean wind makes it cooler than mainland Nagoya). **Onsen experience:** Fu no Yu bath on the airport's fourth floor offers indoor and outdoor baths with views over the runways and Ise Bay. The outdoor rotenburo (露天風呂) is the highlight — soak in 42°C water while watching aircraft land 200 meters away. The juxtaposition is wonderfully strange: traditional wooden bath aesthetics meets jumbo jets. The onsen provides yukata robes, towels, and toiletries (included in admission). English signage available. Separate baths for men/women (tattoos generally not an issue at airport onsen). Ideal for long layovers (4+ hours) or as a unique pre-flight relaxation. **Aviation enthusiast details:** Centrair's observation decks (multiple levels) provide unobstructed aircraft viewing. The north deck overlooks international gates (wide-body aircraft: Boeing 787s, Airbus A330s, occasional A380s on charter flights). The south deck views domestic gates (narrowbody: Boeing 737s, Airbus A320s). Bring binoculars and a radio scanner (121.00 MHz for tower frequency, legal in Japan) for full enthusiast experience. The airport's website publishes daily flight schedules showing aircraft types for spotting planning.
