Izumo Taisha est l'un des sanctuaires les plus anciens et les plus importants du Japon, dédié à Okuninushi, divinité de la bonne fortune et des liens d'union (en-musubi). Selon la mythologie japonaise, chaque mois d'octobre (appelé « kannazuki », mois sans dieux, dans le reste du Japon, mais « kamiarizuki », mois avec dieux, à Izumo) les huit millions de divinités du shintoïsme se rassemblent ici pour décider des destins et des unions de l'année à venir.

Le shimenawa (corde sacrée) de la salle principale pèse 5,2 tonnes et mesure 13 mètres, l'un des plus imposants du Japon. La prière à Izumo suit un rituel distinct : on frappe quatre fois dans les mains au lieu des deux habituelles. L'enceinte, entourée de pins centenaires, dégage une gravité sereine que peu de sanctuaires égalent.

Planning around the crowd

Its own posted hours are 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM. That gives you exactly two windows you can plan from published information rather than from luck: be at the entrance for 8:30 AM, or come late enough that 5:00 PM is your deadline. It lists 1–1,5 heure as a typical visit, so the first slot is long enough to finish before the middle of the day. Everything between those two depends on the day, and we would be making it up if we told you otherwise.

October Kamiari period and New Year's (Jan 1–3) are peak times with 300,000+ visitors. Spring Golden Week also crowded. Weekday mid-morning in February–March or June–July is quietest

Large free parking lot near Kagura-den (¥0, 300 spaces). Gets full on weekends and Kamiari season — arrive before 9:00 or use Izumo-shi Station and train

**Four claps, not two:** Standard Shinto shrines use two claps. Izumo uses four: two bows, four claps, one bow. The four claps honor the four seasons, or—more romantically—represent you and your future partner. Locals follow this precisely. Do it right; it's not optional. **Shimenawa, don't throw coins:** The 13.6-meter rope in Kagura-den weighs 5,200 kg and takes volunteers months to weave from rice straw. It's rewoven every 6-8 years. People used to throw coins to stick in the rope for luck, but that damages it—signs now ask you not to. Use the offering box like you're supposed to. **October, when the gods show up:** During Kamiarizuki (late October to early November, lunar calendar), all 8 million kami in Japan allegedly gather here. The Kamiari Festival and Jinzai-sai involve nighttime rituals welcoming the deities. If you're there, you'll see ceremonies that don't happen anywhere else. Hotels book out months ahead for this period—plan accordingly. **Marriage amulets, very popular:** Okuninushi handles relationships, so people come here to pray for partners (if single) or relationship harmony (if coupled). The shrine sells enmusubi-mamori (縁結び守, marriage amulets) for ¥1,000 in red and white. They're the most popular souvenir. Whether they work is between you and the kami.
