Kyuragi Valley

The ancient camphor approach: The path to Okunchi-no-Okusu begins at the shrine gate and follows the stream for 400m. The tree appears suddenly around a bend — the scale is incomprehensible until you are standing under it. Allow 10 minutes of standing still for your mind to process the size.

Autumn river walking: October–November, the broadleaf canopy turns yellow-gold and leaf fall creates a carpet on the flat stream beds — shallow enough to walk through (bring waterproof shoes). The combination of clear water, gold leaves, and thousand-year-old tree trunks creates an experience of extreme temporal scale.
