The Momiji Kairo (紅葉回廊, 'Maple Corridor') is a 150-meter pathway along the northern shore of Lake Kawaguchiko lined with 60 massive Japanese maple trees that create a tunnel of red and orange foliage in autumn. The trees were planted in the 1960s and have matured into enormous specimens with canopies meeting overhead. Walking through the corridor at peak color (mid-November) feels like passing through a stained-glass cathedral — the sunlight filtering through red leaves creates a warm amber glow.

The corridor forms the centerpiece of the annual Fuji Kawaguchiko Autumn Leaves Festival (early November), when the pathway receives evening illuminations and the lakeside area hosts food stalls and craft vendors. The combination of the illuminated maple tunnel, Mt. Fuji visible across the lake, and the festival atmosphere makes this Yamanashi's premier autumn foliage destination. Even outside the festival, the corridor provides spectacular daytime foliage photography opportunities with minimal crowds during weekdays.

Guide d'initié

Premium
**Peak foliage timing:** The maple corridor's color peak occurs mid-November (approximately November 10–20), slightly later than Kyoto or Tokyo due to Kawaguchiko's higher elevation. Check the Fujisan Kanko Navi website for real-time foliage updates starting early November. The color window lasts 7–10 days before leaves begin falling. **Photography strategy:** Daytime photography (10:00–14:00) benefits from overhead sunlight filtering through the red canopy — the light turns golden-red and creates dramatic shadows. Use a wide-angle lens (16–35mm) to capture the tunnel perspective. Photographing a person walking through the corridor adds scale. Avoid windy days when leaves fall rapidly. **Festival illumination:** The evening illuminations transform the corridor into a glowing red tunnel visible from across the lake. Arrive by 17:00 (opening time) to photograph the transition from daylight to illuminated — the blue-hour twilight (17:00–17:30) provides the most balanced ambient light. The corridor fills with visitors by 18:00 — tripod space becomes limited. **Mt. Fuji combination:** The corridor's location on the northern shore means Fuji sits directly across the lake to the south. Walk to the lakefront boardwalk (3-minute walk from the corridor) to frame Fuji with autumn foliage in the foreground. Morning light (7:00–9:00) provides the clearest Fuji visibility. The corridor + Fuji combination creates a uniquely Japanese autumn composition.
