Shosenkyo Gorge, carved by the Arakawa River through the granite mountains north of Kofu, stretches 5km through vertical cliffs rising up to 180 meters. The gorge has been designated a Special Place of Scenic Beauty — one of only a handful in Japan — for its dramatic rock formations, crystal-clear rapids, and the Sengataki Waterfall that drops 30 meters into an emerald pool. The riverbed is polished white granite, and the water runs so clear that you can see individual pebbles at 5-meter depths.

The main walking path follows the river from the entrance gate to the Sengataki Waterfall, a 90-minute roundtrip walk through mossy forest punctuated by viewpoints overlooking the gorge. The path crosses suspension bridges and passes stone monuments carved with poetry by visiting artists over the centuries. Autumn transforms the gorge into Yamanashi's premier foliage destination — the maple-covered canyon walls turn crimson and gold, creating a color tunnel that rivals Kyoto's most famous temples.

**Autumn foliage timing:** Peak color occurs late October to early November, with the gorge receiving intense weekend crowds during this window. For photography without crowds, visit on weekdays and arrive at the 9:00 opening. The morning light (9:00–11:00) illuminates the eastern canyon walls, creating dramatic contrast between sunlit red maples and shadowed granite. **Sengataki Waterfall viewpoint:** The waterfall viewing platform provides the gorge's signature view — the 30-meter cascade framed by vertical granite walls. A secondary elevated viewpoint (5-minute climb via stone steps) offers a different perspective looking down into the pool. Long-exposure photography (1–2 second shutter) smooths the water into silk — bring a tripod and ND filter. **Ropeway to Panoramadai:** The Shosenkyo Ropeway ascends 300 vertical meters from near the waterfall to the Panoramadai summit platform (1,058m). The 5-minute ride provides aerial views of the gorge, and the summit platform overlooks the Kofu Basin with Mt. Fuji visible on clear days (30% probability). Best visibility: winter mornings (December–February). **Off-season advantages:** Spring (April–May) sees fresh green foliage and high water volume in Sengataki Falls. Summer (July–August) offers cool gorge temperatures 5–7°C below Kofu. Winter (January–February) brings ice formations on the canyon walls and frozen waterfall sections — the gorge sees almost zero visitors in winter despite clear trail conditions.
