Le sanctuaire Motonosumi est l'un des paysages les plus photogéniques du Japon : 123 portes torii vermillon descendent une pente d'herbe verte jusqu'à une falaise où les vagues de la mer du Japon se brisent avec force. Le contraste entre le rouge des torii, le vert de l'herbe, le bleu de la mer et le blanc de l'écume est presque irréel.

Le sanctuaire fut fondé en 1955 à la suite d'une révélation divine par un renard blanc (kitsune). Détail insolite : la boîte à offrandes est perchée au sommet d'un torii à 5 mètres du sol — lancer sa pièce et la faire entrer est un défi qui, dit-on, exauce n'importe quel vœu. L'endroit est isolé (voiture quasi indispensable), mais le détour en vaut la peine.

**Photography strategy:** The classic angle is from the clifftop parking area looking down the torii tunnel toward the sea — best in afternoon (15:00–17:00) when sun is behind you illuminating the gates. Morning creates backlight silhouette (also beautiful, but different aesthetic). Bring wide-angle lens (16-35mm) to capture the full procession. Drone photography is prohibited. **Offering box challenge:** The 5-meter-high offertory box (賽銭箱) has roughly 10% success rate — locals say even that is generous. Use ¥5 coin (lightest, most aerodynamic) and aim for trajectory not force. Watching other visitors attempt is half the entertainment. The shrine's head priest intentionally designed this difficulty as metaphor for life's challenges requiring persistence. **Ryugu no Shiofuki tide blowhole:** Near the shrine's lower torii, the Dragon Palace Tide Blowhole (龍宮の潮吹) shoots seawater 30 meters into the air during high tide + strong waves. Timing requires luck and wave conditions (winter storms produce most dramatic eruptions). The name references underwater dragon palace mythology. **Combine with Tsunoshima Bridge:** a drive connects Motonosumi to Tsunoshima Bridge (another top scenic spot) — efficient two-site morning. Start Motonosumi at 9:00 for early light, then Tsunoshima by 11:00. Both are remote, so having rental car is essential.
