Tsunoshima Bridge (角島大橋) is a 1,780-meter toll-free bridge connecting Honshu to tiny Tsunoshima Island, arcing over water so vividly turquoise it resembles Okinawa more than the Sea of Japan. Completed in 2000, the bridge intentionally curves rather than running straight, creating a graceful S-shape that photographers have immortalized in countless car commercials, tourism campaigns, and Instagram posts. The approach from the mainland offers an elevated vantage where the white bridge seemingly floats over graduated blue-to-green shallows.

The bridge's beauty is functional as well as aesthetic — the gentle curve reduces wind impact and allows drivers to appreciate the seascape rather than mindlessly speeding across. The island itself (population 900) hosts a lighthouse, small beaches, and seafood restaurants, but most visitors come for the bridge itself. Driving across at 50 km/h takes three minutes; the memory lasts decades. The water color peaks in summer (July–August) when sun angle and water clarity combine for maximum brilliance, though autumn (October) offers clearer skies and fewer crowds.

**Optimal viewing point:** Don't just drive across — stop at Tsunoshima Ohashi Park on the mainland side before the bridge. This elevated viewing area provides the iconic panorama of the bridge's S-curve over turquoise shallows. Arrive mid-morning (10:00–11:00) when sun illuminates the water from the east, maximizing color saturation. Sunset (18:00–19:00 in summer) creates golden-hour glow but water appears darker. **Driving experience:** Once photographed from the park, drive across slowly (50 km/h limit is enforced). The roadway sits low to the water — at high tide, you feel like you're skimming the sea surface. Windows down, stop at the island-side parking (free) and walk to the beach. The water clarity allows seeing 5–10 meters down to sand and rock. **Weather dependency:** Water color is dramatically weather-dependent. Sunny days are essential — overcast skies turn the water dull gray. Summer (July–August) offers the most intense turquoise but also brings crowds and heat.
