Oka Castle (岡城) was built on a 100-meter-tall volcanic plateau in 1594, defended by sheer cliffs on three sides and accessed only via a narrow ridge. The castle buildings were demolished in 1874 following the Meiji Restoration, leaving only the massive stone walls that snake across the plateau — creating a 'castle without a castle,' where the ruins reveal defensive architecture more clearly than intact structures ever could.

The ruins are particularly photogenic in autumn when morning mist fills the valley below the plateau, making the stone walls appear to float in clouds — the 'sky castle' effect that tourism boards market extensively.

**Cloud sea season:** The mist (雲海, unkai) occurs October–December on cold, clear mornings when overnight temperature drops below 10°C and the following day is sunny. Arrive at castle by 6:30am (gates open early for cloud watchers). The mist burns off by 9:00. Check Taketa City tourism website for daily cloud predictions. **Taki Rentaro connection:** Japanese composer Taki Rentaro (1879–1903) was born in Taketa, and his famous melody 'Kojo no Tsuki' (Moon Over the Ruined Castle) was inspired by Oka Castle. A monument plays the melody when you press a button. The melancholy song-castle connection adds emotional layer to the ruins. **Stone wall engineering:** The walls use 'nozura-zumi' technique — irregularly shaped natural stones fitted without mortar. The technique creates flexible walls that shift during earthquakes rather than collapsing. The engineering is visible up close — walk the full perimeter to see corner joints and drainage channels cut into foundation stones.
