Le canal d'Otaru, borde d'entrepots de pierre reconvertis en restaurants, boutiques de verrerie et cafes, offre l'une des promenades les plus photogeniques de Hokkaido. Construits au debut du XXe siecle, lorsqu'Otaru etait le principal port commercial de l'ile, les entrepots conservent une atmosphere nostalgique qui s'intensifie en hiver, quand la neige couvre les toits et que les reverberes a gaz se refletent dans l'eau.

En fevrier, le Festival de la Neige d'Otaru illumine le canal avec des milliers de bougies nichees dans des boules de neige et de glace. La ville est aussi reputee pour sa verrerie artisanale, ses boites a musique et ses sushis frais du port. A seulement 30 minutes en train de Sapporo.

Train JR depuis Sapporo jusqu'a Otaru (30 min, ¥750). Le canal se trouve a 10 minutes a pied de la gare d'Otaru. Acces libre 24 h/24.

**Optimal photography:** The classic view is from Asakusa Bridge (canal's north end) facing south toward the warehouses. Arrive 20 minutes before sunset to secure bridge position (it gets crowded 17:00-18:30). Lamps are lit 15-30 minutes after sunset depending on season. Use a wide-angle lens (16-35mm) to capture canal, lamps, and warehouses in one frame. Long exposure (2-5 seconds) smooths water reflections. **Winter timing:** December-February transforms the canal into a snow-covered fairyland, but crowds triple. The Otaru Snow Light Path Festival (小樽雪あかりの路, mid-February, 10 days) adds hundreds of candle lanterns and ice sculptures along the canal. Book accommodation 2-3 months ahead for festival dates. Dress for -10°C to -15°C with wind chill. **Warehouse exploration:** Most warehouses house souvenir shops and cafes. Otaru Warehouse No.1 (outaru倉庫No.1) is a brewery-restaurant serving Otaru Beer and seafood (¥3,000-5,000 per person). The Kitaichi Glass shops (北一硝子) sell Otaru's famous hand-blown glassware. Budget glass items start at ¥1,000; high-end art glass reaches ¥50,000+. **Extended walk:** The canal path continues south 1.3km to the canal's original shipping port. This southern section (past Chuo Bridge) has fewer tourists and retains a working-port atmosphere. The full walk is 30 minutes one-way.
