On 21 October 1600, around 160,000 men fought in this basin in a single day and the outcome decided who would rule Japan for the next two and a half centuries. The battlefield is still farmland, still ringed by the same hills, and the camp positions of the individual commanders are marked across it — which makes it one of the few decisive battlefields anywhere that can be read on the ground.

The prefecture opened this museum in 2020 as the place to start. The ground-floor theatre puts you in the middle of the battle with floor projection and effects, the second floor covers the sequence and the people, and the fifth-floor observation room looks out over the actual field so you can see where everything happened. The theatre requires advance booking; the rest does not.

Sekigahara 894-55, Sekigahara, Fuwa District. About a short walk from JR Sekigahara Station, or by car from Sekigahara IC. Closed Mondays, or the following weekday when the Monday is a public holiday, and 29 December – 3 January. Admission ¥500 for adults, ¥300 for high school and university students, free for junior high school age and under. The ground-floor Ground Vision and theatre give priority to advance bookings, taken from two months ahead up to the previous day; the second-floor exhibition and fifth-floor observation room can be entered without one.

Guide d'initié

**Book the theatre in advance.** Same-day booking is not possible and priority goes to reservations made up to the day before. Without one you can still see the exhibition and the observation deck. **Go to the fifth floor before walking the field.** The observation room looks out over the actual ground, and matching the commanders' positions to the hills from up there makes the walk afterwards work. **The camp sites are marked across the basin.** Ishida Mitsunari's position, Tokugawa Ieyasu's two headquarters, Kobayakawa's hill. They are within walking or short cycling distance and are free. **It is ten minutes from the station.** Sekigahara is on the JR Tokaido Line between Ogaki and Maibara, which makes the whole battlefield doable without a car. **Closed Mondays.** With the usual public holiday shift. The battlefield markers outside are open regardless.
