**Reconstruction viewing:** The main hall (Seiden) is currently being rebuilt using traditional Ryukyuan carpentry techniques — mortise-and-tenon joints without nails. Viewing platforms let you watch carpenters shaping beams and applying lacquer. This live reconstruction is arguably more educational than viewing a finished building, as the traditional techniques are visible in action. The process will continue through 2026. **Outer structures:** While the main palace burned, the outer gates and walls survived — particularly Shureimon Gate (守礼門, the iconic red gate seen in photos) and Sonohyan-utaki (世誇殿), a sacred prayer site. These structures predate the fire and showcase original Ryukyuan architecture. Arrive early (8:00–9:00) to photograph Shureimon without crowds. **Ryukyu history context:** The Ryukyu Kingdom was independent for 450 years before Japan annexed it in 1879 (Meiji era). The castle reflects this distinct identity — neither fully Chinese nor Japanese, but a synthesis. The attached museum (survives in original form) displays royal regalia, tribute trade records, and diplomatic documents showing the kingdom's regional importance.
