Sunayama Beach (砂山ビーチ, 'Sand Mountain Beach') is a secluded cove accessed by climbing over a large sand dune (the 'mountain'), rewarded by a pristine white-sand beach and a natural rock arch extending into turquoise water. The arch creates a natural frame for sunset photos — the sun setting through the arch's opening is Miyakojima's most iconic image.

The beach is small (100 meters long), shallow, and protected by reefs, making it ideal for calm swimming and wading. However, the same reefs create strong currents in the channel beyond the arch — swimming through the arch is prohibited and dangerous.

Guide d'initié

**Arch photography:** The arch is photogenic all day, but sunset (18:00–18:30 in summer, 17:30–18:00 in winter) is peak Instagram time when the sun sets through the arch opening. Arrive 60 minutes before sunset to secure a spot — the beach is small and fills with 50+ photographers on clear evenings. The arch is directly west-facing, making sunset alignment perfect. **Swimming safety:** The beach is shallow and safe for wading/swimming near shore, but the channel beyond the arch (between arch and open ocean) has strong currents that have caused drownings. Do not attempt to swim through the arch or around it. Lifeguards actively warn swimmers to stay in the cove. Snorkeling is mediocre (sandy bottom, few fish) — this beach is about aesthetics, not marine life. **Avoiding crowds:** The beach is most crowded 11:00–16:00 and during sunset. Early morning (7:00–9:00) offers solitude, calm water, and soft lighting for photography. The sand dune climb is tiring in midday heat (5-minute climb through deep sand) — morning or late afternoon visits are more comfortable.
