Route alpine Tateyama Kurobe

**Snow wall timing and crowds:** Peak walls (15-20 meters) hit mid-to-late April, specifically April 15-25. By late May you're down to 10 meters; mid-June, 5 meters and melting. But April, especially Golden Week (late April-early May), brings 2+ hour waits for buses and shoulder-to-shoulder crowds on the boardwalks. If you want big walls without the chaos, try early May weekdays—walls still 10-15 meters, crowds 60% lower. **One-way is the move:** The route is designed one-way, Toyama to Nagano. You climb progressively to Murodo (2,450m), then descend the other side. Round-tripping from Toyama is expensive (¥13,850) and repetitive—you see everything twice. If you must return same-day, leave Toyama by 8am to finish before last transport at 17:00-18:00. **Murodo Plateau, the high point:** At 2,450 meters, Murodo is where you get off the bus and breathe thin air. Walk 15 minutes to Mikurigaike Pond (crater lake, Mt. Tateyama reflects in it on calm mornings before 9am). If you've got 3 hours, hike the loop to Raichozawa Hut and back—late April through May requires microspikes for snow; June through October is wildflowers and clear trails. Bring a jacket; it's 15-20°C colder than Toyama City even in summer. **Kurobe Dam, rainbows optional:** The dam is 186 meters tall, 492 meters long. Late June through mid-October they release water down the spillway—10+ tons per second, creating rainbows in the mist if it's sunny (best 10am-2pm for sun angle). Walk the dam crest (free, 15 minutes, vertigo-inducing views). The café serves Kurobe Dam curry (¥1,000), which is just curry shaped like a dam. **Photos that work:** Snow Corridor needs side light (8-10am or 3-5pm) to show depth; midday flattens it. Mikurigaike Pond mirrors Tateyama best on calm mornings before wind picks up. Kurobe Dam rainbows need sun and the right angle—cloudy days or wrong time, no rainbows. **Budget hack:** Full route is ¥9,050 one-way, which hurts. If you just want the Snow Corridor and Murodo, go Tateyama Station to Murodo and back (¥4,130 round-trip). You skip Kurobe Dam but save ¥5,000 and 3 hours.
