The Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route (立山黒部アルペンルート) is a 90km mountain sightseeing route crossing the Northern Japanese Alps at 2,450m elevation, connecting Nagano and Toyama prefectures. The route uses a series of cable cars, ropeways, trolley buses, and hiking trails to traverse the alpine zone, passing through 20-meter-high snow corridors (April–June), observing the massive Kurobe Dam, and offering panoramic mountain views.

The route is fully accessible from mid-April to mid-November (closed in winter due to snow). The most famous section is the Murodo Plateau (室堂平, 2,450m), the highest point, where visitors can hike alpine meadows, see the Mikurigaike Pond (a volcanic crater lake), and, in spring, walk between towering snow walls (the 'Great Snow Corridor,' 雪の大谷). The route is a pilgrimage for nature lovers and a bucket-list experience for visitors to the Japanese Alps.

Visit late April–early May for maximum height, though this is also the most crowded period (Golden Week). By mid-June, walls shrink to 5–10m. The corridor is a 500m walking path; allow 30 minutes for photos. **Murodo Plateau hiking:** Murodo is the alpine zone's heart. Trails from Murodo Station include: Mikurigaike Pond loop (1 hour, easy, volcanic crater lake with reflection of Mt. Tateyama), Tateyama Summit trail (4 hours round-trip, moderate, shrine at summit), and Jigokudani Valley (20 minutes, active geothermal vents, sulfur smell). Budget 3–4 hours for Murodo exploration. **Overnight strategy:** Staying overnight at Hotel Tateyama (ホテル立山, ¥16,000–22,000 per night with meals, book 3+ months ahead) allows early morning hiking before day-trippers arrive (10:00+).
