Todai-ji

**Pillar with hole:** Inside Daibutsuden's northeast corner stands a wooden pillar with a 30cm × 40cm hole at its base — legend says squeezing through brings enlightenment in the next life and good luck. The hole is sized to match the Buddha's nostril. Children pass easily; adults require flexibility and determination. There's often a queue (5–10 min wait on busy days). Locals consider it good-natured fun rather than sacred ritual. **Optimal visiting time:** The hall opens at 7:30 but crowds don't arrive until 9:00. The 7:30–9:00 window offers relative solitude with the Great Buddha — the scale and presence of the statue is more palpable without crowds. Morning light through the hall's windows creates dramatic illumination. Afternoon (15:00–17:00) is second-best as tour groups depart. Avoid 10:00–14:00 when school groups and tour buses peak. **Nigatsu-do hall side trip:** A 10-minute uphill walk behind Daibutsuden leads to Nigatsu-do hall, a wooden terrace temple offering panoramic views over Nara Park and city. The hall is free to access, far less crowded than Todaiji, and especially beautiful at sunset. This is where the famous Omizutori fire festival occurs each March (monks run with giant torches, spectators catch embers for good luck). The walking path passes through forest with deer and stone lanterns — atmospheric extension to the Todaiji visit.
