**Mantoro festival strategy:** The February Setsubun Mantoro and August Chugen Mantoro festivals are Nara's most atmospheric events — all 3,000 lanterns are lit from sunset to 21:00. Arrive by 16:00 to enter before crowds peak. The main shrine corridor becomes jam-packed by 18:00 with shuffling, slow-moving crowds. Early entry allows photography before congestion. The festival occurs rain or shine; light rain adds atmospheric mist but creates slippery conditions on stone paths. **Lantern corridors outside festivals:** Even on normal days, you can experience lit lanterns in the Man-en-do shrine building (萬燈籠再現, lantern reproduction area) where a small room keeps bronze lanterns lit year-round in darkness — the effect approximates the festival atmosphere. Entry included with main hall ticket. Your eyes need 30 seconds to adjust to the darkness; the flickering light reflecting off gold leaf creates hypnotic ambiance. **Forest walk extension:** Behind the main shrine, a walking path leads into the primeval forest (kasugayama genshi-rin) with sub-shrines scattered among giant cryptomeria and camphor trees. The 1.5km path (30-min loop) passes moss-covered stone lanterns, small stone shrines, and occasional deer. The forest has remained undisturbed for 1,200 years — some trees exceed 1,000 years old. The path is free to walk and offers serene escape from the main shrine crowds. Trailhead is behind the main hall's east side.
