Yakushima est une île subtropicale couverte d'une forêt primaire de cèdres (yakusugi) pouvant dépasser les 1 000 ans d'âge. Le plus célèbre, Jomon Sugi, a plus de 2 000 ans et a inspiré les forêts du film Princesse Mononoké de Hayao Miyazaki. L'île reçoit tant de pluie (on dit qu'« il pleut 35 jours par mois ») que mousses et lichens recouvrent chaque surface, créant un paysage d'un vert surnaturel.

La randonnée jusqu'au Jomon Sugi est exigeante (10-12 heures aller-retour), mais des sentiers plus courts comme Yakusugi Land et Shiratani Unsuikyo (la forêt de Mononoké) sont accessibles en une demi-journée. Yakushima fut le premier site du Japon inscrit au patrimoine naturel mondial (1993).

Flight: JAC (Japan Air Commuter) from Kagoshima Airport (30 min, ¥15,000). Limited seats — book 2+ weeks ahead. On island: Rental car or scooter essential (¥5,000–8,000/day). Bus service exists but is infrequent and doesn't reach trailheads at 5:00 AM departure time.

Depart trailhead at 4:30–5:00 AM for Jomon Sugi to reach summit by 10:00 AM before afternoon mist/rain. April weekdays for best visibility and smaller crowds.

Conseils pour éviter la foule

Golden Week (late April–early May) and August are peak season — trailheads crowded, guesthouses fully booked months ahead. Visit in late March or late October for solitude. Shiratani Unsuikyo can be crowded 10 AM–2 PM; start at opening (8:00 AM) for misty forest atmosphere without crowds.

Jomon Sugi trailhead (Arakawa): no private car access during peak season (March–November) — mandatory shuttle bus from Yakusugi Land parking area (¥920 round-trip, runs 4:00–7:30 AM). Off-season: limited trailhead parking (free). Shiratani Unsuikyo: parking lot ¥1,000/day.

**Jomon Sugi reality check:** The trail is serious mountain hiking — 22km round-trip with 700m elevation gain, rated as 8–10 hours (fit hikers can do 7, slow pace takes 12). The first 8km follows flat rail tracks (former logging railway), then steep ascent begins. Bring 2L+ water, lunch, rain gear (waterproof jacket + pants), and headlamp (trail starts in dark). Guides optional but recommended for first-timers (¥8,000/person). **Shiratani Unsuikyo as alternative:** This ravine trail offers ancient cedars (1,000+ years), moss-covered forest, and waterfalls in a 2–4 hour hike — perfect for visitors without time/fitness for Jomon Sugi. The Moss Forest section is where Miyazaki sketched for Princess Mononoke. Entry: ¥500. **Accommodation:** Yakushima has limited lodging (book 1 month+ ahead for high season April–October). Guesthouses in Miyanoura or Anbo towns (¥4,000–7,000/night) provide shuttle to trailheads. Mountain huts exist for multi-day hikes (reservation required).
