Asahiyama Zoo (旭山動物園) revolutionized zoo design in Japan by creating 'behavioral exhibits' that allow visitors to observe animals in natural behaviors rather than static cages. The penguin exhibit has an underwater tunnel where penguins 'fly' overhead. The polar bear exhibit includes a diving pool with acrylic viewing domes — visitors stand inside while bears swim around them. The seal exhibit has a vertical cylinder 'seal tower' where seals swim vertically, demonstrating their natural water-column navigation.

These innovations saved the zoo from closure in the 1990s and made it Japan's most-visited zoo despite being in rural Hokkaido. The philosophy: design exhibits around the question 'What is this animal's most interesting behavior?' rather than 'How do we display this animal?'

インサイダーガイド

**Winter Penguin Walk:** The zoo's most famous attraction is the winter penguin walk (11:00 and 14:30, November-March) — penguins waddle freely along a snow path through the zoo grounds, unrestrained, followed by crowds. King penguins participate (the large species with orange neck), marching in a loose group. Arrive 20 minutes early to secure viewing spots along the route (marked with ropes). Photography is allowed but don't touch penguins. **Summer highlights:** Polar bear feeding time (13:30) shows bears diving for fish thrown into the pool — the underwater viewing dome captures their full swimming power. Seal feeding (10:00, 12:00, 14:30) demonstrates how seals catch fish mid-water. Red panda exhibit shows these arboreal animals climbing and balancing on suspended ropes. **Visit strategy:** The zoo is built on a hillside — start at the top (polar bear, wolf exhibits) and descend. This avoids uphill walking while tired. Wear comfortable shoes (hilly paths, 2km+ walking). The penguin exhibit is near the entrance (bottom) — save for departure. **Seasonal considerations:** Summer (June-August) has full animal activity and flower gardens but larger crowds. Winter (December-February) is magical with snow, penguin walk, and smaller crowds but brutally cold (-10°C to -20°C). Dress in full winter gear. Autumn (September-October) is the Goldilocks season — mild weather, autumn colors, moderate crowds.
