Kitsuki is the only sandwich-shaped castle town in Japan. Samurai districts sit on two facing plateaus, the north and the south, with the merchants' street running along the valley floor between them, so the class structure of an Edo domain is written into the topography rather than into a street plan. Stone-paved slopes connect the levels, and the two best known — Suya no Saka and Shioya no Saka, facing each other across the merchant street — are the postcard.

Earthen walls, gates and several samurai residences survive on both plateaus and are open to walk through. The southern plateau was selected as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings in 2017. The town also lets anyone in a rented kimono into its paid attractions free, a policy that has made hired dress the normal way to spend a day here.

Kitasunobara and Minamikitsuki, Kitsuki City. By bus or taxi from Kitsuki Station on the JR Nippo Line, which sits some distance outside the town. Walking the streets and slopes is free. Samurai residences, the castle keep and the Kitsuki Castle Town Museum charge individually, with a combined ticket available — confirm current pricing at the tourist information office by the bus stop. Visitors in rented kimono are admitted free to the town's paid facilities.

**Suya no Saka and Shioya no Saka face each other.** Stand at the bottom of the merchant street between them and both slopes rise on either side. That single view is the entire argument for the town's layout. **Kimono rental pays for itself.** Several shops in town rent for a few thousand yen and the free admission to the paid sites offsets much of it. It is also the reason the streets are full of people in dress rather than a staged photo op. **The samurai houses are the substance.** Ohara, Nomi and Isoya residences on the two plateaus are walkable interiors with gardens, not roped-off rooms. **The station is not in the town.** Kitsuki Station is roughly two kilometres out and the walk is along a main road. Take the bus or a taxi. **Combine with Kunisaki.** Kitsuki sits at the base of the peninsula and is the natural first or last stop on a Rokugo Manzan temple circuit.
