Nakamachi Street — Merchant Quarter with Black-Walled Kura
Nakamachi (中町通り) is Matsumoto's former merchant district, lined with traditional kura storehouses built in the late 1800s. The defining architectural feature is black-plastered walls (namako-kabe, 'sea cucumber walls' — thick white mortar joints over black tiles). These fireproof storehouses once protected valuable goods; today they house cafes, craft shops, sake breweries, and antique stores.
The street runs 300 meters parallel to a small canal (metate-gawa), creating a photogenic scene of black kura reflected in water. Walking Nakamachi offers a slower-paced contrast to Matsumoto Castle's grandeur — it's a place for browsing lacquerware, sampling local sake, and experiencing daily life in a preserved merchant town. Several shops maintain Meiji-period interiors with tatami seating and tansu (wooden chests).
