Shiraito Falls (白糸の滝, 'White Thread Falls') is a 20-meter-high, 150-meter-wide curtain waterfall where spring water emerges from volcanic rock layers and cascades in thousands of thin streams creating a 'white thread' effect. The falls are fed by Mt. Fuji's snowmelt that filters through volcanic rock for decades before emerging here — the water is crystal-clear and maintains constant 12°C temperature year-round.

The falls are designated as a UNESCO World Heritage component of Mt. Fuji's cultural landscape, representing the mountain's sacred water sources that have sustained agricultural communities for centuries. The viewing plaza allows close approach to the falls, where mist creates rainbow effects in sunlight and the sound of water drowns out all other noise. The falls are most dramatic after snowmelt (April–June) when volume is highest.

인사이더 가이드

**Geological formation:** Shiraito's unique curtain structure results from water percolating through Mt. Fuji's porous volcanic rock (basalt layers) and emerging where impermeable clay layer forces groundwater to surface. The 150m width represents the clay layer's horizontal extent. This creates hundreds of individual streams rather than single falls — the 'white thread' name describes the delicate appearance. The water's 12°C temperature year-round indicates it's deep groundwater (surface water would vary seasonally), estimated to be 20–30 years old (time since snowfall on Fuji). **Photography timing:** The falls face southwest, making 10:00–14:00 optimal for photography when sunlight hits the falls directly. Morning light creates rainbow effects in the mist (look for double rainbows in spring when mist is thickest). Cloudy days produce soft, even lighting that emphasizes the curtain structure without harsh shadows. Use slow shutter speed (1/4–1 second) to blur water into silky threads; fast shutter (1/500 second) freezes individual droplets. Bring tripod and polarizing filter to manage reflections on wet rocks. **Seasonal variations:** Spring (April–June) has highest flow from Fuji snowmelt — the falls are most powerful and mist is heaviest. Summer (July–Aug) sees moderate flow and crowds (families, tour buses). Autumn (Oct–Nov) adds maple foliage to the surrounding forest. Winter (Dec–Feb) is low-flow season but falls rarely freeze due to constant groundwater temperature; icicles form on surrounding cliffs creating photogenic ice formations. Night illumination (summer only, until 21:00) adds colored lights to falls — attractive but artificial.
