Uwajima Bull Fighting — location in 에히메현, Uwajima

Uwajima is one of the few places in Japan where traditional togyu (bull sumo) continues — two bulls weighing 700–1,000kg push against each other in a circular ring until one retreats or falls. Unlike Spanish bullfighting, no bulls are harmed; the fights are tests of strength and endurance lasting 5–20 minutes. Tournaments occur five times yearly at the dedicated Uwajima Bull Fighting Arena.

The tradition dates to the Edo period when feudal lords organized bull fights as entertainment. Bulls are specifically bred and trained for the sport, living as prized animals with dedicated handlers.

인사이더 가이드

**Fight mechanics:** Two bulls face each other in a 20-meter diameter ring, lowering their heads and interlocking horns before pushing with massive shoulder and neck muscles. The fight continues until one bull retreats backward or is pushed out of the ring — there's no time limit, though handlers can throw in the towel if their bull is clearly defeated. Fights average 10 minutes; championship matches can exceed 30 minutes of continuous pushing. **Tournament experience:** A full tournament features 6–8 bouts from younger bulls (3–4 years old, learning fights) to champion bulls (8–10 years, peak strength). The atmosphere is raucous — spectators shout encouragement, betting is common (though officially discouraged), and when a champion bull enters, the crowd roars. English announcements are minimal; the spectacle is visual. **Bull preparation:** Champion bulls train year-round, pushing weighted sleds and practicing technique with other bulls. Before fights, handlers massage the bulls, feed them special diets, and even give them sake (locals claim it boosts aggression, though evidence is anecdotal). The human-bull bond is central to the sport — handlers sleep near their bulls and celebrate victories together. **Off-season visits:** When tournaments aren't scheduled, the arena offers tours (¥500, 9:00–16:00) where you can see the ring, watch bulls training (mornings), and visit the attached museum displaying famous bulls' portraits and trophies. The museum alone doesn't justify a visit, but combined with training observation, it provides context for the sport's culture.
