Yusu Mizugaura Terraced Fields — location in 에히메현, Uwajima

에히메현 · Uwajima

33.1919°N, 132.4534°E

The Uwajima coast is a drowned ria shoreline — steep hills dropping straight into deep water, with almost no flat land. The people at Mizugaura made some. They cut terraces into a slope above the sea and faced them with dry stone, each step about a metre wide, stacked up the hillside for a hundred metres above the water. The local phrase is that they cultivated until they reached the sky.

The crop is potatoes, planted in autumn and lifted in spring, and the households here have always run half-farming and half-fishing on a peninsula with no other option. The terraces were designated an Important Cultural Landscape — one of the first — and are on the national hundred best rural landscapes list. They are still worked, which is not true of most terraces at this gradient, and they are forty minutes down a peninsula road from Uwajima.

인사이더 가이드

**Spring for the potato harvest.** The crop is planted in autumn and lifted around March and April, which is when the terraces are being worked and when the stand is open. **Look at the wall construction.** Dry stone, no mortar, on a gradient that should not hold soil. Each step is about a metre wide. That is the entire achievement. **It is a working landscape.** People farm these terraces. Stay on the marked paths and off the beds. **Forty minutes down a peninsula.** The Miura peninsula road is narrow and slow. There is very little on the way and nothing at the end but the terraces and a small harbour. **One of the first Important Cultural Landscapes.** The designation exists for places where the way people made a living produced the scenery. This is the textbook case.
