Arima Onsen (有馬温泉) is Japan's oldest onsen resort, with 1,400-year bathing history documented since 631 CE. The town is famous for two distinct spring types: Kinsen (金泉, 'gold spring') with iron-rich brown water, and Ginsen (銀泉, 'silver spring') with clear carbonated water. The springs are considered among Japan's three greatest onsen (日本三名泉).

Arima's mountain valley setting from Kobe provides accessible escape from urban Kansai. The compact town has traditional ryokan, public bathhouses, temples, and shops selling local crafts and carbonated spring water drinks.

Insider Guide

Premium
**Kinsen vs Ginsen experience:** Kinsen (gold) water is rich brown from iron/salt, claiming benefits for muscle pain and skin conditions. The color and smell (mineral-rich) create unique sensory experience. Ginsen (silver) water is clear with carbonation, feeling tingly on skin. Both can be experienced at public baths (¥650–¥550) rather than expensive ryokan. Locals recommend trying both to appreciate the contrast. **Ryokan value:** High-end ryokan (Hyoe Koyokaku, Tocen Goshobo, ¥40,000–80,000/night) offer private onsen, kaiseki meals, and traditional hospitality. Mid-range options (¥20,000–30,000) provide authentic experience at half the cost. Budget travelers can day-trip from Kobe using public baths and restaurants, experiencing 80% of Arima for ¥3,000 total. **Town atmosphere:** Arima's compact size (a short walk end-to-end) creates intimate resort town feeling. The Yumotozaka slope (湯本坂) lined with shops, cafes, and temples is the main walking street. Try carbonated cider (サイダー) made with Ginsen water (¥300, sweet fizzy drink). Evening (17:00–19:00) sees ryokan guests in yukata walking to public baths — most atmospheric time for photography.
