Kinosaki Onsen (城崎温泉) is a traditional hot spring town famous for its seven public bathhouses (外湯, sotoyu) — each with distinct architecture, water properties, and supposed blessings (good fortune, longevity, safe childbirth). The custom is to walk between baths in yukata and geta (wooden sandals) as a therapeutic 'bath pilgrimage,' sampling different water sources throughout the evening.
The town preserves Edo-period atmosphere: willow-lined canal, three-story wooden ryokan, stone bridges, and lantern-lit streets. Kinosaki balances accessibility (2.5 hours from Osaka) with authentic onsen town culture — it's less developed than Arima but more charming, offering immersive hot spring experience without modernization.
