Bessho Onsen — Kamakura of Shinano
Bessho Onsen (別所温泉) is a quiet hot spring town with a remarkable concentration of Kamakura-period (1185–1333) temples, earning it the nickname 'Kamakura of Shinano.' The onsen was discovered 1,000 years ago and has been a healing retreat for warriors and monks. The town is anchored by three ancient temples: Anrakuji (安楽寺) with Japan's only octagonal pagoda (National Treasure, 1290), Kitamuki Kannon (北向観音, 'North-Facing Kannon,' founded 825), and Jyorakuji (常楽寺).
The onsen water is alkaline and silky, known for skin benefits. Three public bathhouses serve the town: Ishiyu (石湯), Ohyu (大湯), and Daishiyu (大師湯), all affordable (¥150–200) and built in traditional wooden architecture. The town is small enough to walk end-to-end in 20 minutes, with family-run soba shops and antique ryokan along the main street. It's far less touristy than Shibu or Nozawa, offering genuine local onsen culture.
