Bitchu Matsuyama Castle — Japan's Highest Mountain Castle

Bitchu Matsuyama Castle (備中松山城) sits atop Mount Gagyu at 430 meters elevation, making it Japan's highest castle with an original keep still standing. Built in 1240 and reconstructed in 1683, the castle is one of only 12 original keeps surviving from the Edo period, and the only original hilltop castle keep remaining in Japan — most mountaintop castles were demolished or lost to fire, leaving Bitchu Matsuyama as a rare architectural and historical treasure.

The castle's defensive position is formidable — steep mountain slopes, massive stone walls built directly on rocky outcrops, and narrow approach paths designed to slow attackers. The two-story keep, though compact, showcases traditional samurai construction with white plaster walls, black tile roofs, and defensive features like stone-dropping openings (ishiotoshi) and arrow slits. The castle's dramatic setting creates seasonal spectacles: in autumn and winter (September–March), morning sea of clouds (unkai) phenomena envelope the valley below, with the castle appearing to float above the mist. The 20-minute uphill hike from the parking area passes through centuries-old stone fortifications, offering glimpses of Takahashi city and surrounding mountains through forest gaps, culminating in the keep's interior exhibits on castle history and samurai life.
