The outdoor bath at Furofushi is built on the rocks at Ogonzaki, on the western edge of Aomori, close enough to the Sea of Japan that spray reaches it in rough weather. The water comes out of the ground iron-rich and turns a deep rust-orange in contact with air, so you sit in an orange pool with the ocean at eye level a few metres away. In the west-facing direction, which means that on a clear evening the sun goes down directly in front of you while you are in it.

The name means the hot spring of no ageing and no death, which is the kind of claim onsen make. What is not overstated is the position: there is no other bath in Japan set this close to open ocean on a coast this exposed. It is a working inn with day visitors welcome, on the Gonō Line coast between Akita and the Shirakami mountains.

Access Information

Henashi, Fukaura, Nishitsugaru District. Roughly 5 minutes by car from Wespa Tsubakiyama Station on the JR Gonō Line; the inn runs a pick-up service for guests. Day bathing is available at three baths — the seaside outdoor bath, the main building's Ogon-no-yu and the annex's Furofushi-no-yu — with hours and prices differing between them and reported at ¥600–1,000 for adults. The seaside outdoor bath closes earlier than the indoor ones. Confirm current hours and fees on 0173-74-3500 before travelling.

**Sunset, and it is west-facing.** The seaside bath looks straight out at the Sea of Japan and the sun sets into it. That is the single reason to time a visit, and it means arriving late in the afternoon. **The seaside bath shuts before the indoor ones.** Reported closing times for the outdoor bath are mid-afternoon to late afternoon depending on the source and the season, earlier than the main building. Ring ahead — this is the thing most likely to go wrong. **Rough seas close it.** It is on exposed rock a few metres from open ocean. In bad weather the outdoor bath is simply not available. **Stay if you can.** Guests can use the bath outside day-visitor hours, which includes early morning and after dark. The inn also serves the local catch. **The Gonō Line is the scenic way in.** The coastal railway between Akita and Aomori runs right along this shore and the Resort Shirakami sightseeing train stops nearby. It is one of the best train rides in Japan.
