Nebuta Matsuri — Giant Illuminated Float Festival
Aomori Nebuta Matsuri runs August 2–7 every year, parading massive paper floats through downtown streets after dark. Each nebuta stands 5 meters tall and 9 meters wide — warriors twist in battle poses, demons bare fangs, kabuki actors freeze mid-gesture. Artisans build these sculptures from bamboo frames and stretched washi paper, then wire 800 light bulbs inside. When lit at night, the floats glow from within like lanterns the size of buildings, colors bleeding through the paper.
Thousands of haneto dancers jump alongside wearing bright yukatas, flower hats, and waist bells that jingle with each hop. They chant 'Rassera, rassera!' in rhythm with taiko drums rolling from flatbed trucks. Spectators can join by renting a haneto costume (¥4,000 for the full set). Over 2 million people pack Aomori during these six nights, filling hotels 50 kilometers out.
August 7 ends with fireworks over Aomori Bay while nebuta floats drift on barges below. The floats reflect in black water, fireworks burst above, and the crowd on shore watches both sky and sea. The festival evolved from Tanabata harvest celebrations, adding warrior themes in the 20th century when artists began competing to build the most dramatic floats.
