The bath at Sukayu is a single room of 160 tatami mats, floored and walled entirely in hiba cypress with no metal or tile anywhere, holding four separate springs in one space. It is called the Hiba Sennin-buro, the thousand-person hiba bath, and it is mixed. There is no partition, no jets and no music — just wood, steam, strongly acidic sulphur water, and a lot of people quietly not looking at each other.

The inn has been here since 1684, in the Hakkoda mountains above Aomori city, in one of the snowiest inhabited places on earth — accumulations here regularly pass five metres. It was designated Japan's first National Health Resort Onsen in 1954. The water is genuinely medicinal in character, sharp enough to sting a cut, and the bath has been operating in essentially this form for three hundred years.

Getting There

Access Information

Sukayu-sawa, Arakawa, Aomori. About 1 hour by JR bus from Aomori Station on the Mikuni Kaido route, or by car via Route 103 through the Hakkoda mountains. Day bathing costs ¥1,000 for adults, including a bath towel and hand towel. The Hiba Sennin-buro is open 7:00 AM – 6:00 PM with a women-only hour from 8:00 AM to 9:00 AM; the smaller Tama-no-yu bath in the annex is open 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM and is gender-separated.

Insider Guide

Premium
**Women-only hour is 8:00 to 9:00 AM.** For that hour men are excluded from the Sennin-buro entirely. If mixed bathing is not for you, this is the window, and the annex bath is gender-separated all day as an alternative. **Mixed bathing etiquette here is specific.** There is a designated women's side of the room, people move to and from the water without lingering, and staring is the one thing that is not tolerated. Follow what the regulars do. **The water is strong.** Highly acidic sulphur; it will sting broken skin and will discolour silver. Rinse afterwards and do not soak for long stretches. **Winter is spectacular and demanding.** Five-metre snow accumulation is normal and the road through Hakkoda closes in bad conditions. The bus from Aomori is the sensible way up in the cold months. **Bring nothing.** Day bathing includes towels, which removes the usual scramble. ¥1,000 covers it.
