The Aspite Line runs twenty-seven kilometres across the Hachimantai massif from Gozaisho in Iwate to Toroko Onsen in Akita, and it is shut by snow from around early November to mid-April. When the ploughs cut it open again the road runs between vertical walls of packed snow up to eight metres high, and it stays that way for weeks.

The snow corridor is the reason people drive it in spring, but it is not a single event — the walls survive in some form into Golden Week, longer than most such roads in Japan. Full opening in 2026 was on 15 April at ten in the morning. Until around late May the road closes overnight, running 8:30 to 5:00, and the pass at Mikaeshi is the high point.

Crossing the Hachimantai massif from Gozaisho in Hachimantai, Iwate, to Toroko Onsen in Akita, about 27 km. Fully closed from around early November to mid-April; full opening in 2026 was on 15 April at 10:00 AM. Normally open 24 hours, but with an overnight closure of 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM in force until around late May. The snow corridor, with walls up to 8 m, lasts into Golden Week. Free to drive. Confirm the current year's opening date and any overnight restriction before travelling.

**Check the overnight closure.** Until roughly late May the road is open only 8:30 to 5:00. Arriving in the evening in early May means finding a gate. **The corridor lasts into Golden Week.** Unlike shorter snow roads elsewhere, the walls here survive for weeks. Late April is the peak and early May still works. **Eight metres at the highest.** Which means driving through a slot with no view out. Stopping is only safe at the marked pull-ins. **Mikaeshi pass is the high point.** The car park there is the base for the summit walks once the snow has gone. **Combine with Toshichi.** The highest hot spring in Tohoku is on the connecting Jukai Line and opens at roughly the same time of year.
