Kegonji is the thirty-third and final temple of the Saikoku pilgrimage, the oldest pilgrimage route in Japan, and it is the only one outside the Kansai region — a day's extra travel east into Gifu, deliberately, as the place where the circuit is completed. Pilgrims who have walked or driven the other thirty-two arrive here to finish.

Because of that it has rituals the other temples do not: three stamps instead of one, a bronze carp on a pillar that pilgrims touch to mark the end of abstinence, and a pitch-dark passage under the main hall that is felt through by hand. The approach road is lined with shops and, in November, with maples that make it one of the best-known autumn walks in the prefecture. Admission is free and it opens at eight.

Access Information

Tanigumi Tokuzumi 23, Ibigawa, Ibi District. By car via the Meishin Expressway, or by train to Tanigumi-guchi on the Tarumi Railway and then bus. Open 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM. Admission is free. The approach road is lined with souvenir and food shops and is a well-known maple avenue in autumn. The temple is the 33rd and final station of the Saikoku Kannon pilgrimage.

**Three stamps, not one.** As the closing temple of the pilgrimage, Kegonji issues three — past, present and future. Pilgrims arriving with a completed book get all three here. **Touch the bronze carp.** It marks the end of the pilgrim's abstinence, and it is worn smooth by a thousand years of hands. **Do the dark passage.** The kaidan-meguri under the main hall is walked in complete darkness with one hand on the wall. It is short, and it is genuinely disorienting. **November for the approach.** The maple avenue along the shop-lined road up to the gate is the reason many Gifu people come, pilgrimage or not. **It is the only Saikoku temple outside Kansai.** The whole route is in Kyoto, Osaka, Nara, Hyogo, Wakayama and Shiga except this one. That deliberate outlier position is what the temple is about.
