Motsuji Temple Garden — location in Iwate, Hiraizumi

Iwate · Hiraizumi

38.9888°N, 141.1117°E

Motsuji Temple was once larger than Chusonji, containing 40 temple buildings and 500 monks' quarters during the Northern Fujiwara era. All structures were destroyed by fire in the 13th–14th centuries. Today, only the magnificent Pure Land garden (Jodo-teien) remains — one of Japan's finest examples of Heian-period garden design and the nation's only surviving large-scale Pure Land garden. The garden centers on Oizumi-ga-ike pond, designed to represent Amida Buddha's Western Paradise. The pond is surrounded by perfectly maintained lawns (where temple buildings once stood), with mountains visible in the distance creating 'borrowed scenery.' The garden includes a yarimizu (winding stream) where courtiers once floated sake cups during poetry parties. The design follows the garden manual 'Sakuteiki' from the 11th century, making it an authentic recreation of Pure Land garden aesthetics. The empty lawns emphasize the garden's scale and the impermanence of physical structures versus enduring landscape design.

The vast empty lawns where temple buildings once stood create a melancholic beauty — the absence of structures highlights the impermanence of human works. The garden is designed for contemplative walking; circumnavigate the pond slowly, pausing at designated viewing points. Each angle offers different compositions of pond, lawn, trees, and mountains. The yarimizu (winding stream) is a rare surviving example of Heian-period water features. During special events, visitors can participate in gokusui-no-en ceremonies where sake cups float down the stream while participants compose poetry. The garden's iris collection (200,000 plants) blooms in late June–early July, covering the pond edges in purple. Autumn foliage (late October–early November) reflects in the pond. Winter snow creates austere beauty. The garden represents Pure Land Buddhism's attempt to manifest Buddhist paradise on earth through landscape architecture — the pond represents the pond of paradise, the lawn represents the jeweled ground, the distant mountains represent the mountains of paradise. The design philosophy holds that viewing beauty can inspire spiritual awakening. Motsuji hosts an annual Ennen-no-Mai dance performance in May — a traditional dance designated Important Intangible Cultural Property. Combine with Chusonji for a full Pure Land pilgrimage.
