Mount Ishizuchi — Shikoku's Highest Sacred Peak
Mount Ishizuchi (石鎚山, 1,982m) is the highest peak in western Japan and one of Japan's seven sacred mountains, a Shugendo (mountain asceticism) training site for over 1,300 years. The summit route includes chain climbs — vertical steel chains anchored to near-vertical rock faces that climbers use to scale exposed cliffs (chains can be bypassed via adjacent stairs).
The mountain is climbed year-round, with snow and ice covering the summit November–April. The Ishizuchi Shrine at the peak sees thousands of pilgrims during the annual climbing festival (July 1–10).
Opening Hours
Ropeway: operating hours vary by season (typically 8:30–17:00). Summit trail accessible during daylight. Summit shrine is always accessible.
Closed: Climbing season April–November. Winter (December–March) requires ice climbing gear — not suitable for general visitors. Ropeway may suspend operations in severe weather.
Entrance Fee
Ropeway ¥2,000 round-trip to 1,300m elevation. No fee for trail access. Mountain hut overnight ¥7,000/person including two meals.
Best Season
May–June for fresh greenery and clear skies. Late October for autumn foliage with dramatic contrast between colored forest and bare rocky summit. Avoid July–August afternoon thunderstorms.
Visit Duration
Full round-trip summit climb: 6–8 hours from ropeway top station. Ropeway top station area only (no summit): 1–2 hours. Allow full day for a proper summit experience.
