Mount Ishizuchi (石鎚山, 1,982m) is the highest peak in western Japan and one of Japan's seven sacred mountains, a Shugendo (mountain asceticism) training site for over 1,300 years. The summit route includes chain climbs — vertical steel chains anchored to near-vertical rock faces that climbers use to scale exposed cliffs (chains can be bypassed via adjacent stairs).

The mountain is climbed year-round, with snow and ice covering the summit November–April. The Ishizuchi Shrine at the peak sees thousands of pilgrims during the annual climbing festival (July 1–10).

Insider Guide

Premium
**Chain climbing:** The summit approach includes three chain sections: (1) Trial Chain (74m, 45° slope) — warm-up climb. (2) Chain 1 (68m, near-vertical) — most challenging, requires upper body strength. (3) Chain 2 (85m, 60° slope). Each chain has a safer staircase bypass route that adds 10–15 minutes. First-time climbers often attempt Trial Chain, then use stairs for the steeper sections. Gloves essential (¥300 at ropeway station shop). **Fitness requirement:** The full climb is 6–8 hours round-trip with 700m elevation gain from ropeway top. The trail is well-maintained but steep (average 15% gradient), with exposed rocky sections above treeline. Bring 2L+ water, energy food, rain gear, and sun protection. Summer (July–August) brings afternoon thunderstorms — start by 7:00am to summit before noon. **Overnight option:** Ishizuchi Sanso mountain hut (¥7,000/person, includes two meals) sits at 1,570m, allowing sunrise summit push. Book 1 month ahead for weekends. The hut is basic (shared sleeping room, futon bedding, no shower) but the pre-dawn summit hike under stars is unforgettable. **Autumn colors:** Late October transforms the mountain into brilliant reds and golds. The contrast between autumn foliage below treeline (1,600m) and barren rocky summit creates dramatic photography. Weekends see 500+ climbers — visit midweek for quieter experience.
