The Railway Museum (鉄道博物館, Tetsudo Hakubutsukan) is one of the world's finest train museums — 28,000 square meters housing 41 historic railway vehicles from steam locomotives to bullet trains, interactive driving simulators, a working miniature railway diorama the size of a tennis court, and comprehensive exhibits on Japan's rail technology development.

The main exhibit hall displays trains chronologically: Meiji-era steam locomotives, 1930s electric trains, postwar luxury sleeper cars, and first-generation Shinkansen. Visitors can board most vehicles to examine interior details. The museum's scale and interactivity make it compelling for both train enthusiasts and general visitors — even non-railfans appreciate the engineering stories. The rooftop terrace overlooks active Shinkansen tracks where trains pass every 3–5 minutes at full speed.

Insider Guide

Premium
**Must-see exhibits:** Start on the 2nd floor with the History Zone (chronological vehicle display) — the 1872 British-built locomotive No. 1 is Japan's oldest preserved steam engine. Don't miss the Class C57 steam locomotive's cutaway display showing internal mechanics. The Shinkansen Zone (1st floor) includes a Series 0 Shinkansen you can enter — this is the original 1964 Olympic bullet train that revolutionized rail travel. **Simulator reservations:** The museum has 8 train driving simulators (¥500–1,000 additional fee). Most require same-day lottery entry (apply at entrance at opening, results posted 10:30). The Shinkansen simulator is most competitive (apply only if seriously interested). The conventional train simulators accept walk-up during afternoon hours — shorter wait times after 15:00. **Miniature railway diorama:** The massive HO-scale diorama (3rd floor) operates on a schedule (shows every 20 minutes, 10-min duration). Arrive 10 minutes before showtime to secure front-row viewing. The diorama simulates a full day in Japanese rail operations — dawn commuter trains, midday freight, evening rush hour, and night — with coordinated lighting changes. The detail is extraordinary: 1,400+ buildings, working signals, and 24 simultaneously operating trains. **Rooftop Shinkansen viewing:** The Panorama Deck (4th floor, free access) overlooks the Tohoku/Joetsu Shinkansen lines. Peak frequency is 8:00–9:00 and 17:00–19:00 when trains pass every 3 minutes. Photography enthusiasts should bring telephoto lens (200mm+) to capture trains at speed. The museum's location allows unobstructed side-angle shots impossible from station platforms.
