The Railway Museum (鉄道博物館, Tetsudo Hakubutsukan) is one of the world's finest train museums — 28,000 square meters housing 41 historic railway vehicles from steam locomotives to bullet trains, interactive driving simulators, a working miniature railway diorama the size of a tennis court, and comprehensive exhibits on Japan's rail technology development.
The main exhibit hall displays trains chronologically: Meiji-era steam locomotives, 1930s electric trains, postwar luxury sleeper cars, and first-generation Shinkansen. Visitors can board most vehicles to examine interior details. The museum's scale and interactivity make it compelling for both train enthusiasts and general visitors — even non-railfans appreciate the engineering stories. The rooftop terrace overlooks active Shinkansen tracks where trains pass every 3–5 minutes at full speed.
