Sendai Tanabata Festival

The Sendai Tanabata Festival stands as Japan's most spectacular star festival celebration, transforming the entire city into a riot of color each August 6-8 with thousands of elaborate paper decorations hanging from every shopping arcade, street, and public space. While tanabata (star festival) is celebrated throughout Japan, Sendai's version has evolved into an unparalleled display of artistic creativity and community participation, with businesses, schools, and families crafting increasingly elaborate streamers that can reach ten meters in length and cost hundreds of thousands of yen to produce. The decorations feature seven traditional elements, each with symbolic significance: paper kimono representing protection from illness, paper cranes for family safety and longevity, purses for wealth, nets for good fishing and harvest, trash bags for cleanliness and thrift, streamers for weaving skills, and kinchaku purses for business prosperity. These elements are combined into cascading displays of handmade washi paper in every color imaginable, creating canopies of paper art that fill covered shopping arcades and flutter in outdoor spaces. The most impressive decorations are displayed in the central shopping arcades, particularly Ichibancho and Chuo-dori, where major department stores and businesses compete to create the most stunning installations. Judging panels award prizes for the most artistic and technically accomplished decorations, with winning designs often becoming local celebrities.
