Senshu Park — Kubota Castle Ruins & Cherry Blossoms
Senshu Park (千秋公園) occupies the site of Kubota Castle (久保田城), the Edo-period stronghold of the Satake clan who ruled Akita domain from 1604-1871. Unlike most Japanese castles, Kubota never had a stone castle keep — only a wooden honmaru (main enclosure) and earthwork fortifications, reflecting the region's scarcity of stone. The honmaru was reconstructed in 1989 as the Osumiyagura tower, offering views over Akita City and the Omono River.
The 20-hectare park is a cherry blossom hotspot with 700+ Somei Yoshino and weeping cherry trees blooming in mid-late April. The blossoms frame the white tower and stone walls, creating postcard-perfect scenes. The park also houses a shrine, pond with lotus flowers (summer), and the Akita City Museum of Red-Brick Folklore (Akarengakan, 赤れんが郷土館), a Meiji-era bank building displaying local crafts and Akita's industrial history. It's a peaceful urban oasis, popular with joggers and families.
