Shikoku Aquarium — location in Kagawa, Utazu

Kagawa · Utazu

34.3129°N, 133.8081°E

The Shikoku Aquarium opened in 2020 at Utazu on the Inland Sea, directly under the Great Seto Bridge, and it organises itself around the water of Shikoku rather than around species: the rivers of the four prefectures, the shallows, the open Inland Sea, the Pacific off Kochi. It is the largest aquarium in the region.

The design puts the outdoor tanks at the same level as the sea behind them, so the dolphin pool and the bridge and the actual water read as one thing, and the late afternoon light off the strait is the reason to come at that hour rather than the morning. Admission is ¥2,600 for adults, it is open every day of the year apart from a short maintenance closure, and it is twelve minutes on foot from Utazu Station.

Insider Guide

**Go in the late afternoon.** The outdoor tanks sit level with the Inland Sea behind them and the light off the strait in the last two hours is what the design was built for. **It extends its hours in summer.** To half past seven in the school holidays and nine in Golden Week and Obon. Evening visits are a different experience. **It is organised by water, not by animal.** Rivers of the four prefectures, the shallows, the Inland Sea, the Pacific. Reading the sequence in order makes the geography of Shikoku legible. **Twelve minutes from the station.** Which makes it one of the few major attractions in Kagawa that genuinely does not need a car. **The Great Seto Bridge is overhead.** The park it sits in is the viewpoint for the bridge, and the two are the same stop.
