Uwajima Bull Fighting — Traditional Togyu Tournaments
Uwajima is one of the few places in Japan where traditional togyu (bull sumo) continues — two bulls weighing 700–1,000kg push against each other in a circular ring until one retreats or falls. Unlike Spanish bullfighting, no bulls are harmed; the fights are tests of strength and endurance lasting 5–20 minutes. Tournaments occur five times yearly at the dedicated Uwajima Bull Fighting Arena.
The tradition dates to the Edo period when feudal lords organized bull fights as entertainment. Bulls are specifically bred and trained for the sport, living as prized animals with dedicated handlers.
