Yokohama Marine Tower (横浜マリンタワー) is a 106-meter-tall lattice tower originally built as a lighthouse in 1961 to commemorate Yokohama Port's centennial. Renovated and reopened in 2022, the tower now serves as observation deck, event space, and symbol of Yokohama's maritime heritage. The observation floors (29th–30th levels, 94m height) provide 360° views over Yokohama Bay, Minato Mirai skyline, Chinatown, and on clear days, Mt. Fuji.

The tower's slender profile and red-and-white color scheme make it distinctive landmark visible throughout Yokohama's waterfront. The lower floors house cafe, bar, and multipurpose event spaces. The surrounding Yamashita Park (Japanese garden along the waterfront) features rose gardens, the historic Hikawa Maru ocean liner (now a museum ship), and promenade with harbor views. The tower's location at the heart of Yokohama's tourist district makes it convenient combination with Chinatown, Red Brick Warehouse, and harborfront walks.

Insider Guide

Premium
**View comparison — Marine Tower vs Landmark Tower:** Both offer Yokohama observation, but different perspectives. Marine Tower (¥1,000, 94m height) is waterfront location — views over harbor, bay, ships, and close-up Chinatown/Minato Mirai. Intimate scale, less crowded, sunset over harbor. Landmark Tower Sky Garden (¥1,000, 273m height, in Minato Mirai district) is much taller — panoramic city/mountain views, Mt. Fuji sightline (if clear), see Marine Tower below as tiny red spire. If choosing one: Landmark Tower offers superior height/views, Marine Tower provides harborfront atmosphere and convenient Chinatown location. Doing both is redundant unless you're observation deck completist. **Sunset timing:** The tower faces west over Yokohama Harbor — sunset views are highlight. Arrive 45 min before sunset (17:00 winter, 18:30 summer), enjoy daylight panorama, watch sun set over bay (ships silhouetted, Minato Mirai lights begin), stay into evening for night cityscape. Weekends see moderate crowds; weekday evenings are quiet. The bar on 29th floor serves cocktails (¥1,200–1,800) — overpriced but allows relaxed sunset viewing with drink. **Yamashita Park stroll:** The waterfront park stretches 700m along the bay — rose gardens (peak bloom May–June, Oct–Nov), Hikawa Maru ship museum (日本郵船氷川丸, ¥300 entry, 1930s luxury ocean liner preserved as museum), harbor promenade with benches facing water. The park is free and pleasant for pre/post-tower walking. Combined route: Chinatown lunch → Yamashita Park stroll → Marine Tower observation (60 min, timed for sunset) → evening return through illuminated park. Total 2.5–3 hours.
