Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse — location in Kanagawa, Yokohama

Kanagawa · Yokohama

35.4528°N, 139.6433°E

The Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse (横浜赤レンガ倉庫, Akarenga Soko) consists of two historic brick warehouses built in 1911 during Yokohama's port expansion, now converted into a shopping and dining complex while preserving the original Meiji-era architecture. The warehouses served as customs inspection facilities and storage for goods passing through Yokohama Port — silk, tea, and imported Western products. After decades of disuse, they were renovated in 2002 into cultural-commercial spaces.

The complex today houses 50+ shops and restaurants: craft beer bars, artisan chocolate shops, imported goods, Japanese craft products, and event spaces hosting seasonal markets (German Christmas market in December, Oktoberfest in October). The plaza between warehouses hosts outdoor events year-round, with views across Yokohama Harbor to Minato Mirai's skyline. The waterfront promenade connects to Osanbashi Pier and Yamashita Park, making the warehouses a key stop on Yokohama's harborfront walking circuit.

Insider Guide

Premium
**Warehouse 1 vs Warehouse 2:** Warehouse No.1 (1号館) houses cultural/event spaces — gallery exhibitions, performance hall, and seasonal pop-up markets. Check event schedule before visiting; sometimes closed for private events. Warehouse No.2 (2号館) is main shopping/dining building — three floors of boutiques, craft beer hall Baird Beer Yokohama (excellent selection, ¥800–1,200/pint), Bills Yokohama (Australian cafe, ricotta pancakes ¥1,800), and souvenir shops. Most visitors spend time in Warehouse 2. **Craft beer recommendation:** Baird Beer Taproom (ベアードビール横浜) occupies prime waterfront position in Warehouse 2. The brewery produces exceptional Japanese craft beer — try the tasting flight (4 beers × 120ml, ¥1,600) to sample IPA, stout, pilsner, and seasonal. Food menu includes beer-friendly items: fish & chips (¥1,400), sausage platter (¥1,600). The outdoor terrace overlooks harbor with Minato Mirai skyline; ideal for sunset beer (17:00–18:30). Reservations not required but terrace fills quickly on weekends. **Seasonal events:** December Christmas Market (mid-Nov to Dec 25) transforms the plaza into German-style market — wooden huts selling glühwein (mulled wine, ¥700), sausages (¥800), roasted almonds, and European crafts. The atmosphere is festive with lights and decorations; very crowded weekends but worthwhile. Oktoberfest (late Sept–early Oct) features German beer, live oompah music, and bratwurst. Summer hosts beer garden (July–Aug) with outdoor seating and craft beer selections. Check official website for annual event calendar.
