Zao Fox Village (Miyagi Zao Kitsune Mura)

The first fox you see at Zao Fox Village is sleeping in a dirt hollow three meters from the entrance gate, curled nose-to-tail with its fur catching morning sun. It opens one eye when you approach, decides you're not interesting, and goes back to sleep. Twenty meters further, five foxes lie scattered across a hillside like orange throw pillows someone tossed randomly. One is grooming its tail. Two are napping. One is watching you with the flat, assessing stare foxes use when deciding if you're a threat or food or neither.

The village keeps 100-plus foxes across six color variations: red (the standard orange-coated wild type), silver (black with white-tipped guard hairs), platinum (cream-colored), shadow (dark charcoal), arctic (white, summer coat brown-grey), and blue (steel-grey). They roam a forested hillside crisscrossed with dirt paths where visitors walk among them. The foxes aren't tame—they're habituated. They've learned humans don't hurt them and sometimes bring food, so they tolerate close proximity. But they won't come when called and they'll bite if you corner them or make sudden moves. Staff patrol constantly, watching for problems.

Fox behavior varies by individual. Some are bold and approach within arm's reach, sniffing shoes and backpacks. Others stay five meters away, observing from a safe distance. During feeding time (10:00 AM and 2:00 PM), the dynamic shifts. Foxes converge from all over the hillside, moving with purpose toward the feeding stations. They shoulder each other aside, snap at competitors, and snatch food from slower individuals. The social hierarchy becomes visible: dominant foxes eat first, subordinates wait or steal scraps. The vet staff toss food pellets onto the ground and the foxes pounce, crunch, swallow, then immediately scan for the next piece. After 10 minutes the feeding ends and they drift back to their napping spots, bellies full.
