Tsumagoi grows more summer and autumn cabbage than anywhere else in Japan — roughly 150 million heads a year, on fields between 700 and 1,400 metres where the summers stay cool. From July to late October the plateau is an unbroken green grid running to the base of Mt. Asama, and the road that crosses it, the Tsumagoi Panorama Line, is one of the best drives in the Kanto region for the simple reason that there is nothing else on it.

Aisai no Oka is a low hill beside the northern route with a car park, a bell, and a raised platform. The name means beloved wife's hill, and it exists because of a local event in which men climb the platform and shout their feelings for their wives across the cabbage fields. It is entirely sincere, mildly absurd, and has made Tsumagoi a self-declared home of devoted husbands. Whatever you make of that, the hill is the best free viewpoint over the fields with Asama behind them.

Tashiro, Tsumagoi, on the northern route of the Tsumagoi Panorama Line, about five minutes from the Tashiro area. Car required. Free to visit, with a small car park for roughly 15–20 vehicles. Closed during the winter months, approximately December to March.

**The fields need the season.** From July through late October the plateau is solid green and the drive is the whole point. Outside that window the fields are bare earth and the hill is just a hill — and from around December to March the site is closed for winter anyway. **Drive the Panorama Line properly.** The route runs roughly 40 kilometres across the cabbage plateau in northern and southern sections with almost no buildings. Aisai no Oka is a stop on it, not a destination in itself, and treating it as one stop on a two-hour drive is how it works. **Asama decides the photograph.** The volcano sits behind the fields and is frequently in cloud from late morning. Early is better, and the clearest views tend to come after a front has passed through. **Yes, you may ring the bell.** The bell, the shouting platform and the hug platform are all there for public use, and locals do use them. The associated shouting event is held annually. **There is nothing here.** No shop, no vending machine, no staff. Fill up and buy drinks in Tsumagoi or Kusatsu before driving the plateau.
