Kusatsu Onsen Ryokan Stay — location in จังหวัดกุนมะ, Kusatsu

จังหวัดกุนมะ · Kusatsu

36.6213°N, 138.5967°E

A night at a Kusatsu ryokan follows a ritual refined over centuries: check in around 15:00, change into the cotton yukata robe left folded in your room, slide open the paper shoji screens to the garden view, then shuffle in geta sandals to the baths before dinner. The staff bow when you arrive and when you leave each room. Your futon bedding appears while you're at dinner, laid out on the tatami with the pillow positioned just so. Breakfast the next morning appears the same way, timed to the minute you requested.

Most include two meals in the rate: dinner is kaiseki — 8 to 12 small courses arriving in lacquered boxes and ceramic bowls, mountain vegetables pickled or grilled, river fish, miso soup, rice that refills automatically. Breakfast is similar but lighter. The onsen water piped into the ryokan's baths comes directly from the yubatake or nearby sources, same 45-degree acidic sulfur water that defines Kusatsu.

เวลาเดินทาง

From Tokyo (Shinjuku): ~3 hours by JR Agatsuma Line Ltd Express 'Kusatsu' to Naganohara-Kusatsuguchi + bus (total ~¥3,980) | From Tokyo by highway bus: ~2.5 hours direct (¥3,000–3,500, most convenient) | From Narita Airport: ~4 hours

วิธีเดินทางไป

Bus (recommended): JR Highway Bus or Seibu Bus from Tokyo Station or Shinjuku to Kusatsu Onsen direct (~2.5 hrs, ¥3,000–3,500 one-way). Several departures daily — reserve in advance. Train + Bus: JR Shinkansen from Tokyo to Takasaki (~50 min), then JR Agatsuma Line Limited Express 'Kusatsu' to Naganohara-Kusatsuguchi (~90 min), then bus 25 min. Total ~2.5 hrs but involves 2 transfers. Car: Via Kanetsu Expressway to Shibukawa-Ikaho IC, then ~60 min on Route 353/292 through mountains. Free parking at most ryokan. The mountain road (Route 292) to Kusatsu is steep and winding — snow chains required November–April.

ช่วงเวลาที่ควรไป

Winter evenings (6:00–9:00 PM) for atmospheric yubatake steam in cold air. Autumn weekday nights for onsen baths surrounded by fall colors. Avoid Golden Week (late April–May) and New Year (Dec 28–Jan 3) when ryokan are at maximum capacity and prices spike.

เคล็ดลับเลี่ยงคนเยอะ

Kusatsu's yubatake (central hot water field) is crowded noon–3:00 PM year-round. Early morning (6:00–8:00 AM) is quiet and most atmospheric. Weekend ryokan stays book out weeks ahead during autumn/winter — reserve at least 1 month in advance. Weekday stays offer 10–20% lower rates.

ข้อมูลที่จอดรถ

Most ryokan offer free on-site parking (notify in advance). Public parking near the yubatake: ¥200–500/hour, ¥1,000–1,500/day. Driving to Kusatsu in winter requires snow tires or chains — the mountain approach road (Route 292) is steep. The highway bus option eliminates winter driving concerns entirely.

**Booking and costs:** Ryokan charge per person, not per room, and the rate always includes two meals. Weekends cost 20-30% more than weekdays. For Naraya expect ¥30,000-50,000 per person; Yubatake Souan runs ¥20,000-30,000; budget options start around ¥15,000. Book directly through ryokan websites (most are Japanese-only, use Chrome's translate function) or through Ikyu.com or Relux, which aggregate higher-end options. Mention dietary restrictions when booking — vegetarian, allergies, no raw fish — because the kitchens plan kaiseki courses days in advance. **Room selection:** Japanese-style rooms have tatami floors and futon that appears while you're at dinner, laid out by staff you never see. Bigger ryokan offer Western-style beds in rooms that mix tatami and carpet, useful if your back can't handle futons. Room size is measured in tatami mats (jo): 8-10 mats is standard (about 13-16 square meters), 12+ mats is spacious. Request a room facing the yubatake or mountains in the booking notes — not guaranteed but often granted. **Kaiseki dinner:** Served 18:00 or 19:00, either in your room or a private dining area. The courses come one by one over 90 to 120 minutes: seasonal appetizer, sashimi (maybe tuna or local river fish), something grilled (fish or Joshu wagyu), a hot pot, mountain vegetables, rice, miso soup, pickles, and a small dessert. Gunma specialties include konjac (a translucent yam jelly, strange texture), yuba (tofu skin), and river fish like ayu or iwana. Portions look small but add up — pace yourself. Breakfast is similar but simpler: grilled fish, rice, miso soup, pickles, natto if you want it. **Bathing protocol:** Most ryokan have indoor and outdoor baths, gender-separated. Larger ones add private family baths (kashikiri-buro) you can reserve for 30-45 minutes. Wash completely at the low shower stations before entering any bath — sit on the stool, soap up, rinse off. Then soak 10-15 minutes, exit to cool down, soak again. Don't bring your towel into the water; fold it on your head or leave it poolside. Tattoos are becoming more accepted but check the ryokan's policy; some require covering them. Best times to bathe: after dinner (21:00-22:00) and before breakfast (6:00-7:00), when the baths are quietest.
