Hakusui is an irrigation weir, 14 metres high and 87 metres across, built between 1934 and 1938 on the upper Ono river, and it is regularly called the most beautiful dam in Japan. The reason is a technique its designer, a prefectural agricultural engineer named Ono Yasuo, worked out to protect the soft volcanic bedrock below: instead of letting the overflow fall straight, the downstream face was stepped in a curved stone apron so the water breaks into a moving lace across the whole width. The stones read as fish scales under it.

It is an Important Cultural Property, designated in 1999, and it still does its job — this is working infrastructure, not a monument. The left and right banks give completely different views, and the site is unstaffed, unlit and free.

Ogi-machi, Taketa City, on the upper Ono river. By car from Bungo-Taketa Station; no public transport. Free and open at all hours. Car park and toilets on the left bank at Shigita; the approach roads are narrow farm lanes. The left and right banks give different views and are not connected on foot at the dam itself.

**The two banks are separate trips.** The right bank gives the face straight on; the left gives the curve and the scale of the apron. Getting from one to the other means driving back around. **Water volume decides everything.** After rain the sheet covers the whole face; in a dry spell it thins to strands and the effect goes. There is no schedule to check, which is part of the appeal. **The lanes in are single track.** Farm roads with no passing places in sections. Take it slowly and do not follow a satnav shortcut. **Nothing is provided.** No shop, no lighting, no staff, no vending machine. Bring water and do not plan to arrive after dark. **Taketa is spring water country.** The town sits on the Aso aquifer and has a set of designated spring sites, plus Nagayu's carbonated baths nearby. The dam fits into a day built around water.
