Nara produces 90% of Japan's traditional sumi ink (墨, solid ink sticks) and is a major center for fude (筆, calligraphy brushes) — both crafts essential to Japanese calligraphy (shodo, 書道) and sumi-e ink painting. Sumi ink is made from pine soot or vegetable oil soot mixed with animal glue (nikawa) and hardened into sticks that are ground on an inkstone with water before use. The highest-grade ink uses century-old pine soot and aged glue, resulting in deep, lustrous black when diluted.

Nara's ink-making tradition dates to the 6th century when monks brought the craft from China. Top-grade ink sticks cost ¥10,000–100,000 depending on soot source and age. Fude brushes use animal hair (horse, goat, weasel, raccoon) bundled by hand into bamboo handles. Akashiya (明昌) is Nara's premier brush maker, with brushes ranging from ¥1,000 student models to ¥50,000 professional brushes made from rare hair types.

**Kobaien ink grading:** Ink sticks are graded by soot source — pine soot (sosho-boku, 松煙墨) produces warmer, brownish-black ink preferred for artistic sumi-e; oil soot (yuseki-boku, 油煙墨) creates cooler, blue-black ink favored for calligraphy. Higher grades use older soot and glue, aged 5–10 years before sale. A mid-grade ink stick (¥5,000–8,000) offers excellent quality for serious practitioners. Ultra-premium sticks (¥50,000+) are collectibles valued for fragrance (aged glue develops musk-like aroma when ground). For travelers, a ¥2,000–3,000 stick makes a meaningful souvenir and is functional for decades if stored properly (cool, dry place). **Brush selection guide:** Brushes are categorized by hair type and stiffness. Goat hair (yagi) is soft and absorbent, ideal for large, flowing strokes. Horse hair (uma) is springy and responsive, good for controlled line work. Weasel hair (itachi) is finest and most expensive, used for detail. Combination brushes (blend hair types) offer versatility. For beginners, a medium-sized goat-horse blend (¥3,000–5,000) suits general calligraphy and sumi-e. Akashiya staff can demonstrate brush characteristics by writing samples — ask for a demonstration even if not purchasing (they're gracious about educating visitors). **Ink-making demonstration:** Kobaien offers demonstrations showing traditional production: soot mixing, hand-kneading the ink paste, molding, and drying. Demonstrations require 1-week advance reservation (call +-2965, Japanese only — ask your hotel concierge to call). The demonstration is free and lasts 30–40 minutes. You'll see master craftsmen pressing ink into antique wooden molds carved with dragons, phoenixes, and calligraphy — these molds themselves are cultural artifacts. Photography permitted. This behind-the-scenes access reveals the labor intensity behind a craft most people only know as a finished product.
