Takachiho Yokagura — location in จังหวัดมิยาซากิ, Takachiho

จังหวัดมิยาซากิ · Takachiho

32.7158°N, 131.3103°E

Between mid-November and early February, 20 villages across Takachiho hold all-night kagura ceremonies in private homes and community halls. The host family clears their main room, installs a temporary shrine, and invites neighbors to witness 33 dance sequences performed from 7pm until dawn. Dancers are local farmers who inherit roles through family lines—the same families have performed specific dances for 8-12 generations. They wear hand-carved wooden masks (some over 200 years old) and costumes made by village women. The flute player sits cross-legged for seven hours straight. At 3am, someone makes fresh amazake (sweet rice drink) to keep everyone awake.

**The shrine performance is compressed theater, not the real ritual.** You see four dances: Tajikarao (strongman god forcing the cave open), Uzume (the bawdy dance that made the gods laugh), Goshintai (sacred sword presentation), and Iwato-biraki (final triumphant cave-opening). Each dance lasts 8-12 minutes. The 100-seat hall has tatami floor seating with thin zabuton cushions—bring extra padding if you have bad knees. **To attend a real all-night yokagura:** Call Takachiho Tourism Association (0982-73-1213, Japanese only) in October and ask which families are hosting in November-February. They may connect you with a host if you speak Japanese or travel with an interpreter. Bring ¥3,000 cash as offering, plus beer or sake as gift. Dress warmly—the rooms are heated but doors open frequently. The performance follows a fixed sequence of 33 dances, each representing a different myth. Dance #17 (around 11:30pm) shows the god Sarutahiko guiding the sun goddess's grandson to earth—this is when children usually fall asleep. Dance #22 (around 1:45am) is Uzume's erotic dance, performed by a male dancer in drag making exaggerated hip thrusts—this is when elderly farmers laugh hardest and quote the bawdy lyrics to each other. **Villages with the oldest kagura traditions:** Iwato (performers never use written music, passing tunes orally), Arashima (masks carved in 1830s still in use), Gakuto (women are allowed to dance—very rare). The Akagami and Kurogami communities perform a two-village alternating cycle every year. **What happens during the night:** After each dance, there's 5-10 minutes while dancers change costumes. People chat, drink, eat onigiri. Around midnight, the host family serves hot udon. At 4am, as dawn approaches, everyone's posture straightens—the final sequence (dances 30-33) builds toward the sun goddess emerging from the cave, coinciding with actual sunrise outside.
