**Renting a whole house versus a single room:** A full machiya rental (¥30,000-100,000/night, sleeps 4-8) is insane money for two people but splits beautifully among a group—¥10,000 per person for an entire 150-year-old house with a private courtyard, full kitchen, wooden soaking tub, and three tatami bedrooms. You'll cook breakfast on a gas stove, hang laundry in the courtyard, and live like an actual Kyoto family instead of hotel guests. Single-room rentals (¥8,000-20,000/night) give you the architecture without the space—shared kitchen, shared bath, and neighbors on the other side of paper-thin shoji screens. If you're solo or a couple and ¥15,000/night feels steep, this works. If you're a group of four, rent the whole house. **What makes machiya different from regular houses:** The layout is called "unagi no nedoko"—eel's bed—because it's long and narrow like an eel. The front of the house faces the street with latticed windows (koshi) that let you see out but keep passersby from seeing in. Behind that is the entry hall with an earthen floor (hashiri-niwa), then the raised tatami living area, then a tsuboniwa courtyard (three meters square, open to the sky), then more tatami rooms stretching back. The courtyard solves the problem of a house with no side windows—it pulls light and air into the middle of the building. Modern renovations add air conditioning, Western toilets, and WiFi, but the good ones leave the bones untouched: wooden beams blackened from 100 years of cooking smoke, sliding fusuma doors with hand-painted cranes, an alcove (tokonoma) for hanging scrolls. You'll notice the ceilings are low (1.9 meters in some rooms) because people were shorter in 1890. **Where to stay based on what you want:** Gion and Higashiyama machiya put you in the postcard version of Kyoto—walk five minutes and you're at Yasaka Shrine or Kiyomizu-dera. Prices run ¥20,000-40,000/night because location. Nishijin machiya (northwest Kyoto) are cheaper (¥12,000-25,000/night), quieter, and surrounded by weaving workshops and neighbors who've lived there for 50 years. You'll hear temple bells in the morning and someone's grandmother sweeping the street at 6:00 AM. Central machiya near Nishiki Market (¥15,000-30,000/night) balance walkability and price—you're from everything but still in a residential neighborhood. Choose Gion if you want convenience. Choose Nishijin if you want to see how Kyoto actually lives.
